Garden Design

A home with a garden is always an attraction. A garden brings people close to nature with the presence of plants, flowers, butterflies, bees and birds. It brings more beauty to a home and comfort to the people living in it. One of the nicest ways to experience your garden is on your garden decking.

Depending on the space available and an individual’s preference, a garden design may either be small or wide. For smaller spaces, any homeowner can design it according to his or her preference. For wider spaces that involve various structures and landscaping, professional garden designers can do the planning and designing. For those with small children, play areas with trees and slow growing shrubs plus flower beds are great. For the senior folks, gardens with raised beds are ideal because beds especially their edges are perfect as a sitting area while they tend to their plants.

Prior to making a garden design, planning is highly recommended. Homeowners should observe certain patterns of the sun shade and wind and how they change throughout the year. It’s advisable that a garden is well drained for the benefit of the plants and away from the place where the frost first appears. Garden design should also take into consideration the pathways and the areas that should be left open as well as those that need to be screened.

Not all garden areas are perfect that is why homekeepers need to check properly the condition of the soil before deciding on making a garden. For garden spaces that are not well drained for plants, people may still grow plants that still grow in poorly drained soil. Another option is to create raised beds or lay drainpipes. Installing drainpipes, however, require more work. Experts suggest that underground utility lines and septic installations should be carefully studied first before digging ditches.

Did you know that the earliest gardens date back to the 1500s B.C. as depicted in the tomb paintings of Egyptians? The paintings showed lotus ponds with acacias and palms surrounding them. Persia is also renowned as the site of ancient gardens including the Gardens of Babylon, one of the Wonders of the World. In fact, Darius the Great was believed to own a paradise garden. However, history has it that the most influential gardens in ancient times were the Ptolemy’s gardens at Alexandria and the gardening style of Lucullus in Rome. Flower gardens gained popularity in the 19 th century and became a major part of home gardening in the 20 th century.

Meanwhile, it was from the late 17 th century to the early part of 19 th century when garden design changed from being a controlled one to a design that is free and open. During that time, the most popular garden designs were that of the French, Italian and Dutch formal gardens.
