Decking General

Decks are a common feature of many houses whose owners love to relax and unwind outdoors after a day in the office, school or just at home. Decks, notably those situated in the garden or patio, provide a great place to gather and entertain family and friends. They are absolutely a lovely extension of a home.

A deck is a flat surface just like a floor but only elevated from the ground and constructed outdoors as a house extension. This need for outdoor space has contributed to what people now call “outdoor living” or a lifestyle that involves a connection to nature.

Regardless of the materials used, decking can be made as part of landscaping in the garden, as an alternative to patios and as extension of a home’s living space. Many homeowners who opt to build deckings in their abodes usually want to create their own styles hence decking is available in various materials, sizes, colors, costs and quality.

The most popular material used for decking is treated wood or timber which come in many sizes, grades and species. Other types of hardwood such as Western red and Eastern white cedar, redwood, teak, ipe, Brazilian cherry, cumaru, cypress and mahogany are also ideal. Although the ACQ pressured treated southern pine (yellow) can be used, it may not be as sturdy as cedars and other hardwood.

People wanting to try a different material other than wood may consider several types of high quality synthetic decking materials. These include composite lumber which is made from mixed plastics and wood fiber, recycled plans made from high-density polyethylene, polystyrene and PET plastic, cedar composite, polyvinyl chloride, patented waterproof aluminum, steel, vinyl as well as fiberglass composite. Fiberglass is well suited for any type of environment, will not twist, warp and swell because of its strength.

Today, more alternative materials are being used in building decks. The main reason is their low maintenance ideal for busy people. Reports have it that each year, new decking products enter the market. Take for instance the synthetic decking market. In the year 2000, synthetic materials comprised only eight percent of decks being constructed but through the years, its use has gone up to 15 percent.

In planning a decking in the home, people need to find out first about the volume of decking they require. The first step is to determine the deck square footage by using the length X width formula. If an odd shape design is involved, the formula to use is to add all the straight lengths and total the whole linear length.
